Valens Global is seeking full-time interns for fall 2017 who can commit to working 30-40 hours per week. Interns will receive a monthly stipend of $2,000, prorated if the interns work fewer than 40 hours a week. Work for the internship can be performed in Valens’s D.C. office or else remotely.
The Valens internship program seeks to give interns a strong professional experience as part of a highly talented team. Our highly competitive internship program is research-centric, giving our interns the opportunity to provide analysis and research assistance on a range of projects, including threat assessments, briefings, reports, and books. Over the course of the semester, interns will build skills in research methodology, open-source intelligence analysis, and analytic writing.
Ideal candidates should be prepared to contribute immediately to the research team, and should be able to take the lead on a variety of projects. Consistent with Valens Global’s organizational philosophy, interns are encouraged to challenge conventional wisdom and critically analyze existing problems. Projects will be writing intensive. We want you to be able to produce polished, well-organized, thoughtful prose. Interns will be expected to consult a wide range of open-source materials, including primary and secondary sources, and social media data. We want you to come into your job knowing where to look.
The candidate must be organized. The candidate must be able to work effectively under pressure. The candidate will be expected to stay on top of deadlines and produce quality work products within tight time constraints. And on top of all that, we want you to be likeable. Interested candidates should demonstrate strong interest in the study of violent non-state actors. Applicants would ideally have prior research experience, and have the ability to think creatively about complex problems. Dedication, focus, and enthusiasm are valued. The ability to conduct research in a foreign language is a plus, but not required. Particularly helpful languages include Arabic and French.
- Candidate must possess strong critical thinking and analytic skills.
- Candidate must be a strong writer and editor.
- Must be at least a college junior (third year) in good standing.
- Interns should have knowledge of Microsoft Office programs.
- Must be able to commit to a minimum of 30 hours per week.
- Must be eligible to work in the United States.

- At least two, and preferably three, references. Note: We are not looking for letters of recommendation, but rather people willing to serve as a reference for your qualifications who would be happy to talk to us about your candidacy.
- Two writing samples. One should be brief (5 pages or less) and display the applicant’s ability to convey expansive, complicated information concisely and clearly. The second sample should be longer (at least 10 pages) to showcase the applicant’s ability to conduct in-depth, nuanced research. Samples should include all relevant footnotes or citations.
